UK People

The British were dismissed by Napoleon as a "nation of shopkeepers," but the intended slight is actually a compliment. The British engaged in trade the world over, and today that spirit of enterprise, curiosity, good business sense and eclectic style is maintained. Fashion salons rival those in France and Italy. Britain has some of the finest antiques shops, art galleries and auction houses in Europe. Traditional and modern styles are blended to produce some colorful and out of the ordinary clothing and craft items, and it is often in the provinces that the best examples are found.

Not so long ago, British food was seen as typically uninspired and overcooked. But British nouvelle cuisine is exciting yet still essentially British, the ingredients fresh and flavorful. British beer has rediscovered great traditions, too; every English county has a lively range of local ales to back up the standard brews. In Scotland, sample the best from the country's range of whiskeys and superb single malts.
