At last count, London had 43 theaters-and many more on the fringe, the equivalent of off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway. Some shows open and close so fast they might never have been; others run and run until they stagger with fatigue. The ones that make it big these days are usually musicals, with Andrew Lloyd Webber leading the way (Evita, Phantom of the Opera, Cats); light comedies with plenty of sexual innuendo; and all-star revivals of great plays of the past. Worth checking out is the longestrunning play in London (over 30 years!), Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap. For British theater at its best, try these good old reliables:
