National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery A walk through this gallery founded in 1856 as a respository for pictures of politicians and royalty, is like a stroll through centuries of British social history. The gallery is home to the only known portrait of William Shakespheare, as well as the best-known painting of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. The newest gallery, opened in late 1993, exhibits 20th century portraiture and photography.
