To really get a handle on London and its utterly fascinating history, visit this rewarding and enjoyable museum. The story of the city from prehistoric times to the present is told through set piece galleries focusing on important periods. The Roman section is superb; its reconstructed rooms, one with a fabulous mosaic floor, and its sculptures are particularly special highlights. Another highlight is the Lord Mayor's State Coach from the 1750s, a glittering golden extravaganza that is still used during the Lord Mayor's Show each November and the coronation of a new sovereign. The Museum in Docklands, affiliated with the Museum of London, brings to fife dockland activity "through the ages".
