Houses of Parliament

Parliament The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, are mainly to be admired from the outside. The present building replaced an older palace dating from the 11 th century. Most of this earlier building burned down in 1834. The present structure's linear form is doubly enhanced by the vertical thrust of Victoria Tower and the clock tower known as Big Ben. Inside access is limited because of security reasons and because it is the workplace of British government. You can attend debates in the House of Lords and House of Commons on a first come first served basis in a line for the "Strangers' Galleries" (public galleries) outside St. Stepher~s Entrance. Tours of the Houses of Parliament are possible by applying to the Parliamentary Education Unit, Norman Shaw Building North, House of Commons, London SWlA 2TT, U.K., at least four weeks in advance, except between early August and late September when tickets ($$) can be purchased at the Houses of Parliament.
