
Festivals and Holidays
Britain has few national or religious holidays compared with other countries. Here are a few: January I New Year's Day On New Year's Eve (the night before) people "first foot," to visit neighbors and welcome in the New Year. In Scotland, New Year is known as Hogmanay, and January 2 is a holiday.

March I St. David's Day Although not an official holiday, it is a celebration of the patron saint of Wales. April 23 St. George's Day is the festival of the patron saint of England. It, too, is not an official holiday. Bank Holidays These include Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day (December 26). They are called bank holidays because originally government offices and banks closed on those days. There are also spring and summer bank holidays on the last Monday in May and August. November 30 St Andrew's Day is celebrated in Scotland, though it is not an official holiday.
