Durham
Ship building and coal mining are two essential features of the county of Durham. In sharp contrast to this heavy industry, with its attendant dirt and noise, are the many rare wild flowers that grow in very few places in England other than here, in the Upper Teesdale area of the county, with its huge bulk of mountain limestone. There are vast wildernesses of open moorland, with a very meagre population, as a balance to the much more densely peopled northern part of the county.

If Durham had to be summed up in one word, then the very nature of the landscape, with its rocky crags and waterfalls, including the highest in England, and the heavy ram' *in summer and snow in winter, would make 'rugged' the only choice. This is not, however, to say that the county does not have a great attraction for visitors. For many people this ruggedness is its great beauty, and it certainly has its fair share of tourists.
The city of Durham is quite a different proposition. Away from the industrialisation of the Tyne, it is an extremely pleasing and attractive city with an eleventh century castle that has found a new lease of life as part of the university. 'Mighty' and "majestic' aptly describe the beautiful cathedral, around which flows the River Wear. High on its rock, it looks almost as much a fortress as a cathedral, and indeed it was so described by Sir Walter Scott but in rather more poetic terms.
