Devon, Glorious Devon! Conjuring Devon teas, memories of hot summer days and quaint old teashops serving home made scones, strawberry jam, and thick Devon cream! Memories too, of winding country lanes, thatched cottages by the roadside, and the great uplands of' Dartmoor with its mountains and moors, its forests, and its tors.


It is difficult to think of' Devon and not to think of' Its famous sons; Raleigh, Grenville, Hawkins and Drake. Names that lime bounded through the pages of England's history since, in the days of Queen Elizabeth the first, they rallied to England's call, and played their considerable part in the struggle against the might of' Spain.


Devon's very name means 'land of' the valleys' and it is justly famous for the beauty of' its scenery, Its picturesque villages, and beautiful harbours. 01' these, and there tire many, three stand out as particularly lovely example, of the richness of this county. Brixham, with Its colorful old harbor from which, in days past, sailed a great fishing sadly depicted. Oil the quayside stands a statue commemorating the landing, III William of Orange. Though Brixham in that it Is a fishing village, Clovelly has a quite different character, a real old world charm that probably


cannot be matched anywhere lit England. No cars are to be seen in these cobbled streets, dropping steeply down to the little harbor but donkeys, pulling sledges laden with goods of all kinds. The very houses, with their open doors affording glimpses of a polished brass, tell of another time. Flowers everywhere, wild fuchsia in the gardens, window boxes pots and hanging baskets. all filled with a great profusion of' color dose by the ruins of tile 12th century Torre Abbey lies, the village of' Cockington. With its famous forge, and carefully preserved thatched cottages it remains unspoiled. and is considered by many to be the perfect example of a Devon village


A little distance away from this quiet unhurried charm is Torquay Devon's largest seaside resort, in a superb setting that shows its uniquely Mediterranean flavor, heightened by the presence of sub tropical trees and shrubs. to great advantage Extremely popular holiday centres here are to be found. in addition to Its undoubted scenic attraction, all the fine hotels, restaurants and shops that would be expected.


On the river Exe stands the ancient capital of the south west, and Devon's county seat, Exeter. Despite having all the attractions that a city of' its size, and importance, should have, Exeter still retains many features connected with its past. which are very worthy of attention. This past can be traced right back to the Celtic people who settled here over thousand years ago. Exeter's crowning glory is, Without doubt it's magnificent cathedral. Built III the, fourteenth century its Norman towers and renowned carved figures on the west front are but two of the features which make it so interesting to explore.


Devon is a county rich in all that is best in England, and with its riches amply rewards all the many, people who come to savour them.
