Devon
Devon, Glorious Devon! Conjuring Devon teas, memories of
hot summer days and quaint old teashops serving home made
scones,
strawberry jam, and thick Devon cream! Memories too, of
winding country lanes, thatched cottages by the roadside, and
the great
uplands of' Dartmoor with its mountains and moors, its
forests, and its tors.
It is difficult to think of' Devon and not to think of' Its famous
sons; Raleigh, Grenville, Hawkins and Drake. Names that lime
bounded through the pages of England's history since, in the
days of Queen Elizabeth the first, they rallied to England's call,
and played their considerable part in the struggle against the
might of' Spain.
Devon's very name means 'land of' the valleys' and it is justly
famous for the beauty of' its scenery, Its picturesque villages,
and beautiful harbours. 01' these, and there tire many, three
stand out as particularly lovely example, of the
richness of this county. Brixham, with Its colorful old
harbor from which, in days past, sailed a great fishing

commemorating the landing, III William of Orange. Though
Brixham in that it Is a fishing village, Clovelly has a quite
different character, a real old world charm that probably
cannot be matched anywhere lit England. No cars are to be
seen in these cobbled streets, dropping steeply down to the
little harbor but donkeys, pulling sledges laden with goods of
all kinds. The very houses, with their open doors affording
glimpses of a polished brass, tell of another time. Flowers
everywhere, wild fuchsia in the gardens, window boxes pots
and hanging baskets. all filled with a great profusion of' color
dose by the ruins of tile 12th century Torre Abbey lies, the
village of' Cockington. With its famous forge, and carefully
preserved thatched cottages it remains unspoiled. and is
considered by many to be the perfect example of a Devon
village
