Derbyshire
Derbyshire has a beauty of valleys and streams, rivers and
hills, great rocky crags and gentle undulating pastures, that has
been compared to the countryside of Switzerland, and would
be difficult to surpass anywhere 'in the world. It surprise no
one when, in 19 5 1, over five hundred square miles of the
county was designated an area of great natural beauty an
became Britain's first National Park.

As might be expected in such a lovely setting, great country
houses were built here by famous families. South of the tow of
Bakewell, famed as the home of the delicious Bakewell tarts,
lies the turreted, medieval outline of Haddon Hall, a lovely and
romantic old house surrounded by terraced gardens. Not far
away, and in contrast to the almost rambling beauty 0 Haddon
Hall, stands one of the truly great stately homes of England,
the imposing and majestic Chatsworth House, bull for the
Duke of Devonshire *in the early eighteenth century.
On Ascension Day each year a curious custom known as well
dressing takes place in Derbyshire. It takes the form of mosaic
like decoration of the wells with flowers and leaves pressed
into wet clay to produce pictures, usually of theme from the
Bible. Well dressing is really a thanksgiving ceremony for the
pure, clean water that the wells have provided over the years.
Many visitors are attracted to this quaint and charming custom,
a lovely relic of the middle ages which, hopefully will continue
for many years to come.
