Cheshire
It seems but a few years ago that the idea of artificial satellites,
radio signals to far distant galaxies and the like, belonged in the
realms of science fiction. To people of the Middle Ages the
thought of such things, if they could be grasped at all, would
surely have been condemned as the work of sorcerers. That
the younger generations now accept these things as perfectly
normal is one more example of the enormous speed with
which certain branches of science progress. To many people,
thoughts such as these must come to mind when we are
presented with the giant spectacle of the Jodrell Bank radio
Telescope, and we are told that its two hundred and fifty feet
wide reflector is busily searching the skies, picking up radio
signals from outer space, whilst not many miles away we can
walk the streets of a city that seems to belong to medieval
England.

In fact the origins of the lovely old city of Chester go back to
a much earlier time than the middle ages and there are many
Roman remains to be seen here as evidence of its great
antiquity. By far the greater part of the attractions that make
Chester a much visited city is later than Roman. Probably its
most famous features are The Rows, galleried streets of shops
that are reached by stairways and are quite unique. There is
also what is believed to be the last surviving example of a sedan
chair at the odd sounding address of No. 13 City Walls!
Chester is extremely fortunate in having a far sighted planning
department that appears to be making sure that any
development necessary to the city's well being is not at the
expense of its historic and beautiful buildings.
Cheshire lies close to the heart of the bustling industrial centre
of the Mersey and the great port of Liverpool. It also has its
own industrial areas, particularly those concerned with the
making of textiles. There is a salt mine at Winsford; a fact that
seems to surprise many people, who perhaps imagine that all
salt comes from Siberia! We are singularly fortunate, however,
that in this land of ours every county, no matter how heavily
Industrialized it may be, has its green fields and rivers.
Perhaps, fifty years ago, it was not easy for ordinary people to
reach far outside their cities and towns and to know the
delights of the countryside that surrounded them. For the vast
majority this is no longer so, and this is as it should be.
England is not a large country and it has many counties
contained within it. It would be easy, therefore, to suppose
that there was little difference between them. It is always a joy,
however, to find that this is not so; that although they share
a common heritage they have, as Cheshire so clearly and
delightfully shows, a charm and individuality of their own.
